The Fifth Annual OpenLens Festival will be held at the DIVA Center, 110 W. Broadway, January 9-10-11, 2009. The festival's mission is to provide filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work in a competitive event. This year's program features the South West Oregon Short Film and Video competition and the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge. Both programs include filmmaker recognition and prizes. The festival includes seminars, screenings, and this year's special guest animator/host Joanna Priestley.

January 9 (Friday) Eugene Premier: An Evening with Animator Joanna Priestley
7:00 PM - Admission: $5.00

Joanna Priestley has produced, directed and animated 19 award winning films about subjects dear to her heart: relationships, abstraction, plants, magic, menopause and prison.  Her work is shown world wide and she has had retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Center for Contemporary Art (Warsaw, Poland), American Cinematheque (Los Angeles, CA) and the Stuttgart Animation Festival (Stuttgart, Germany) and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Film Institute, the MacDowell Colony, Fundación Valparaíso and Creative Capital.  Priestley currently teaches animation at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland.  She was founding president of ASIFA Northwest and has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts since 1992.

This interactive seminar will include a discussion of the important components of animation, a mini-survey of animation techniques, and an introduction and demonstration of Adobe Flash and the Wacom tablet. Award winning animated films will be shown during the seminar.








YOUTH VISIONS
3:00 PM - 5:30 PM Screening: Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge
Admission: Donation

Teen student filmmakers celebrate the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge competition entrants and winners with a special screening, panel discussion about entrant filmmaking, and an awards presentation. Limited Seating.


7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Screening: SW Oregon Short Film & Video Competition
Admission: $5.00
Introduced by Festival Host Joanna Priestley

A program of video and film productions selected by the Festival's Jury will showcase the work of emerging Southwest Oregon film and video artists. Offical awards ceremony and wrap party on Sunday at 3:00 PM.

9:00 PM - 10:00 PM - Post screening reception/discussion. Free



January 11 (Sunday) - DAY 2 Festival Events

Description: Mr. Strange will be giving an interactive seminar about what goes into the creation of successful games and will answer questions about how people interested in the gaming industry can focus and hone their skills and interests.  Among other topics, he will cover the status of avatar animation, examining how to plan for and implement player feedback loops from character animations.  This requires a very different mindset compared to the passive character development used in film and video.  The different roles of audio (feedback as opposed to context) will also be explored.






YOUTH VISIONS

Teen student filmmakers celebrate the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge competition. This is an encore non-voting screening session.


3:30 PM - 4:30 PM Encore Screening: SW Oregon Short Film & Video Competition
Admission: $5.00

An encore screening of video and film productions selected by the Festival's Jury will showcase the work of emerging Southwest Oregon film and video artists. Audience choice award voting continues. Offical awards ceremony and wrap party on at 5:00 PM.

 


5:00 PM - 6:30 PM - OpenLens Awards Ceremonies and Wrap Party
Admission: Free

The festival ends with and awards ceremony and wrap party for filmmakers and guest. The winning Southwest Oregon Short Film and Video awards will be made and the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge winner recognized. The wrap party is a time for festival entrants, guests, and supporters to gather and celebrate the weekend's events.
